Andrea paints landscape, portraits and garden motifs in watercolour. For the past decade her work has centered on an intensive exploration of light and beauty. Watercolour’s transparency and luminosity best expresses her love of nature’s seasonal colour changes and shifting light. In her paintings, she strives to recapture the awe and excitement of examining a blossom, the bark of a tree, the tapestry of foliage, reflections in water. Personal attachment to beautiful places in her life -- her garden, her friends’ gardens, the Halifax Public Gardens, Bayswater, Shubie Canal, Point Pleasant Park, and York Redoubt -- inspires the desire to draw and paint them.

In October 2006, her watercolour “Birch Tree, York Redoubt” received honourable mention in the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour associate member’s show. From 2006 to 2009 she held an open studio during the annual Go North tour of north end Halifax studios and galleries. In 2009 Andrea participated in the Shubenacadie Art Connection show, and her painting “But I Was Going To Say When Truth Broke In” was purchased by the Shubenacadie Canal Commission. Since 2010 she has completed watercolour portraits including a set of family history portraits and architectural commissions including a commemorative gift depicting the façade of the Bank of Nova Scotia building on Hollis Street. Her work is held by a number of private collectors. In March 2015 Andrea and her students are exhibiting watercolours and drawings at the Chase Art Gallery in the Nova Scotia Public Archives in Halifax.

Born in Toronto, Ontario, Andrea completed an MA in Economics at Queen’s University in 1980. She worked briefly as an economist. In order to pursue her life long dream of becoming an artist, she moved to Halifax NS to begin studies in painting, drawing, and art history at NSCAD. After graduating in 1985 with a BFA her focus has been on watercolour painting. Since 2002 she has taught adult and children’s watercolour and drawing classes for Halifax Recreation. She has continued to develop her skills in portraiture and in 2014 began teaching portrait drawing. She also gives private watercolour instruction to several students.
